How to Convert TSV to Excel

TSV (Tab-Separated Values) files use tab characters to separate columns. This guide covers why TSV exists, where it comes from, and how to convert it to Excel without losing data.

Why TSV instead of CSV?

TSV avoids the ambiguity of commas. In CSV, a field containing a comma must be quoted. In TSV, tabs rarely appear inside data values, so quoting is almost never needed. This makes TSV simpler to parse and less error-prone for data that contains commas (names, addresses, descriptions).

Where TSV files come from

**Bioinformatics.** BLAST search results, gene expression matrices, and variant call formats often use TSV. Tools like GATK, samtools, and bedtools output tab-delimited data. The gene expression community adopted TSV specifically because CSV caused widespread data corruption when gene names like MARCH1 and SEPT1 were auto-converted to dates by Excel.

**Database exports.** MySQL's SELECT INTO OUTFILE, PostgreSQL's COPY TO, and SQLite's .mode tabs all produce TSV output. Many database GUI tools (DBeaver, pgAdmin, MySQL Workbench) offer TSV as an export option.

**Clipboard copy-paste.** When you copy cells from a spreadsheet (Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers) and paste into a text editor, the result is tab-separated text. This converter can process that pasted text directly via the "Paste data" tab.

**Web scraping and data pipelines.** Many ETL tools and web scrapers use TSV as an intermediate format because it handles multi-line text better than CSV.

How the conversion works

The converter reads each line, splits by tab characters, and maps each column to an Excel column. The first row is treated as column headers. All values are written as text-typed cells to prevent Excel from altering your data.

Tips

  • If your TSV file does not have a header row, the converter will use the first data row as headers.
  • For files with mixed delimiters, try the CSV converter which auto-detects.
  • After converting, use "Text to Columns" in Excel if you need to split a column further.
  • For bioinformatics data, consider sorting by p-value or fold change after conversion.
